Earthquake catalogues and seismicity models (engl.)

(as Part of NHRE: “Hazard Projects and Advanced Geotechnologies")

 

(I) Overview and Motivation

Abb. 1 catalog completeness

Students have to be trained in the data elaboration and handling of seismicity data compiled in earthquake catalogs. Basic procedures of probabilistic hazard assessment have to be applied to come up with regional seismicity models.

The target area corresponds to the home countries. The students have to contact national institutions and responsible authorities concerning the data availability and the state of national earthquake catalogs including a list of events as well as their epicentral coordinates, magnitude and source parameters. Seismicity models have to be elaborated in terms of occurrence rates of magnitudes (see Fig. 1 to Fig. 3).

 

The Tasks are specified in (II) for different Sub-Tasks (see the scheme below).

(II) Specification of Tasks

The participants of the project should deal with the following tasks:

 

Task 1 − Identification of hazard input parameters

Magnitudes and intensities of historical Earthquakes (and existing correlations) Recent fault lines Types of source mechanism (tectonic regime) Source depths

Earthquake catalogues (Coordinates) Search for National or International Data Centers and responsible (authorized governmental) institutions

 

 

Task 2 − Elaboration of basic data for seismicity models

Areal and fault line elements Seismic zones Location of major cities within active areas (Selection of Reference Sites)

Check of GSHAP input parameters for regional centers Check of published hazard studies GIS-mapping of proposed seismicity models

 

 

Task 3 − Application of tools (provided by the lectures) to the selected study area

Determination of completeness intervals for relevant magnitude ranges Elaboration of a representative database

Magnitude occurrence rates Appropriate (proposed) attenuation models
